BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Frequently Asked Questions

Before you depart on your Anatolia Expedition tour, you might have a few questions about what to expect when you travel. Below find our most frequently asked questions to give you total peace of mind before you set off on your next adventure with us.

Travel Documents

Travelers to Turkey must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of their trip.
Most US citizens require an electronic visa (e-Visa), which can be applied for easily online before travel.

You’re responsible for ensuring you have the correct documentation. If you’re visiting neighboring regions, check whether additional visas are required.

Yes — we highly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip.
Your policy should cover:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

  • Lost luggage

  • Medical emergencies and evacuation

You can add insurance through Anatolia Expedition’s Travel Protection Plan or use your own provider.

Payment

We accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and PayPal for deposits and payments.
While traveling, you’ll find that credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Turkey, though small local shops and markets may prefer cash (Turkish Lira).

ATMs are readily available in most cities and tourist areas. Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid card security holds.

Your trip deposit will vary depending on your chosen itinerary and travel tier.

  • Deposits are typically $100 per person and are non-refundable, but flexible credit can be applied toward a future trip within 5 years.

  • Full payment is usually due 60 days before departure (refer to your booking confirmation for details).

The weather in Turkey and the surrounding Mediterranean regions can vary by season. We recommend packing light, breathable layers that you can mix and match. Include a light waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes for exploring historical sites and natural wonders like Cappadocia or Ephesus.

Essentials to bring:

  • Passport and travel documents

  • Phone and charger

  • Universal power adaptor

  • Lightweight day bag

  • Travel pillow or eye mask

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Medications and copies of prescriptions

  • Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen

  • A few modest clothing options for visiting mosques or rural villages

If you plan to join a Classic Gulet Cruise, don’t forget:

  • Swimwear and cover-up

  • Soft-soled deck shoes or sandals

  • Quick-dry towel

  • Motion sickness tablets (if prone)

Each guest may bring one suitcase weighing up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and one small carry-on that fits under the seat or in the overhead compartment.
We recommend using a medium-sized suitcase and labeling all bags clearly.
For domestic flights or internal transfers in Turkey, luggage limits may vary slightly — your itinerary will specify any differences.

If you’re traveling across multiple regions, lighter luggage will make your journey smoother. Always check your airline’s baggage rules before flying to or from Turkey.

Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Turkey.

  • U.S. citizens can apply for an e-Visa online at www.evisa.gov.tr before travel.

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Turkey.

  • Ensure your passport has at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps.

If your tour includes border crossings (such as a Gulet cruise visiting nearby Greek islands), additional visa requirements may apply — please check with your travel consultant or the relevant consulate before departure.

Anatolia Expedition is not responsible for obtaining travel visas or entry documents on your behalf.

For safety reasons, rolling suitcases are not allowed inside the coach.
Please bring a soft-sided daypack, tote bag, or backpack that can be stored securely under your seat or in the overhead area.

Turkey offers excellent value, but you’ll want extra funds for:

  • Optional Choice Experiences

  • Meals not included in your itinerary

  • Souvenirs, shopping, or tipping

Most cities have ATMs that accept major cards like Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
We recommend carrying a small amount of Turkish lira for local markets, taxis, and rural shops.
Notify your bank before travel, and avoid relying on a single card in case of temporary connection issues.

Prepaying gratuities is optional.
You can add them during your online booking, or choose to tip your Tour Director and Driver directly during your trip.

Suggested tip amounts:

  • Tour Director: $5–10 USD per person per day

  • Driver: $3–5 USD per person per day

Getting Ready to Travel

We recommend a few free travel apps to make your Anatolia Expedition journey smoother, more organized, and even more memorable:

  • WhatsApp: Stay connected with your Travel Director and fellow guests through group messages and updates. You can use Wi-Fi or mobile data to chat, share photos, and coordinate meeting points during your tour.
› Download from the App Store or Google Play.

  • Facebook & Instagram: Share your travel moments with family and friends, and tag @AnatoliaExpedition to be featured on our community pages.

  • Packr or PackPoint: Create customized packing lists based on your itinerary, weather forecasts, and planned activities across Turkey.

  • The Weather Channel or AccuWeather: Keep up to date on the latest forecasts for Cappadocia, the Mediterranean coast, or Istanbul before and during your trip.

  • Duolingo: Brush up on a few Turkish words and phrases to connect with locals — even five minutes a day helps!

  • Google Translate: Instantly translate menus, street signs, or quick conversations to make your travels even easier.

The weather in Turkey varies by region — layers are key!
We suggest packing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers

  • Lightweight jacket or rain shell

  • Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses

  • Adaptor plug and phone charger

  • Travel pillow

  • Medication and copies of prescriptions

  • A photocopy of your passport and important travel documents

If visiting mosques or religious sites, please pack modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
